History
In the late 1980’s there was growing concern as HIV and AIDS began spreading to the Southern states. Grassroots organization members shared concerns for the people who had died or were dying from the disease, their need for care, and the consequences of the AIDS stigma.
WAAO achieved incorporation as a non-profit agency in 1989. Since then, WAAO has provided services such as case management for affected individuals and prevention education. For 20 years, WAAO employees, Board members, and community members have helped WAAO grow into an agency that serves people living with HIV and works diligently to stop the spread of HIV in ten counties in Alabama.
