Sally Reeves

Sarah Bartlett Reeves (Sally) was born a Connecticut Yankee in 1934 to Henry and Florence Bartlett. After her father joined the Air Corps as a chaplain during World War I, the rest of the family lived in Massachusetts, Florida and again in Connecticut. The Korean War found her family moving to Illinois, California, and the Philippines, where she graduated from high school at the Clark Air Force Base Dependent School.

Following Sally’s graduation from Connecticut College for Women, the family moved from Savannah, Georgia to Spain, and then to Louisiana. She was married in Shreveport to Aubry Reeves, an Alabama native and an Air Force navigator/bombardier. The military moves continued, first to Florida, then Montgomery, Alabama (where their son, Tom, was born), then Idaho (two daughters, Sarah and Katy), California, Massachusetts, Louisiana, Maine, and upon Aubry’s retirement in 1975, to Northport Alabama.

During her travels, Sally took several post-secondary courses and relied on libraries for research as well as for reading pleasure. In Northport, she was able to enroll in the University of Alabama’s School of Library and Information Studies. Juggling family, everyday life events, class-work, and part-time jobs, she finally earned her master’s degree in 1979. That same year she began her career as a professional librarian, specializing in government documents at UA’s Gorgas Library.

Since retirement as Gorgas’s Reference and Information Services Department Head, Sally has enjoyed volunteer work. Her current interests include WAAO, WUAL’s Radio Reading Program for people with disabilities, and the Friends of the Library Bookstore. Add six grandchildren to the mix–retirement is never dull!
